Magdalene's Journey

A fragile peace, maintained for centuries, is shattered by a force that ripples through the very fabric of reality. In a world of crystalline perfection, an ancient, untamed power awakens, its chaotic energy crashing against the established order. As cracks spread through their world, a lone artisan, the last of their kind, must delve into the forgotten art of stained glass, not to mend what is broken, but to understand the beautiful, violent truth of the awakening and to harness the storm before it consumes everything.
The awakening was only the beginning. Now, with the world fractured and the old ways in ruins, the raw, untamed power of the sea-green and turbulent blue chaos threatens to shatter what little remains of the crystalline order. The artisan, now a reluctant leader, must embark on a perilous journey to the heart of the storm, seeking to unite warring factions and forge a new path forward. But the chaos is not without its own intelligence, its own will, and it will not be tamed easily. The shattering is not just of their world, but of everything they thought they knew.
Out of the wreckage of the old world, a new one must be born. The artisan, having faced the heart of the chaos and survived, now holds the key to reforging their reality. It is a delicate and dangerous art, weaving the raw power of the chaos with the enduring strength of the crystal, creating something stronger and more beautiful than what was lost. But the remnants of the old order are not so easily forgotten, and there are those who would see the chaos contained rather than embraced. The final conflict is not one of violence, but of creation, as two opposing visions for the future collide in a final, breathtaking display of light and color.

A Message From
Robert Jerome Pagan
This project is the culmination of a lifetime spent wrestling with faith, feminism, and the power of narrative. It began at age eleven with Anita Diamant's "The Red Tent," which cracked open my world by giving voice to the silent women in the margins of the stories I was taught. Growing up Catholic, I was immersed in that world; I loved the ritual and iconography, even running Bible schools, yet always felt a disconnect. That feeling sharpened as I came into my identity as a queer person and activist. My work has since been dedicated to weaving together diverse narratives that explore the complexities of identity and community, much like in my theatrical piece "An American Posada," which reframes a traditional religious story to investigate themes of displacement and belonging. This "Magdalene" is the ultimate expression of that artistic impulse. It is my personal "red tent"—an act of spiritual activism to reclaim a foundational story from the patriarchal structures that have confined it. It’s an effort to explore the queer space of a faith that is radical and inclusive, giving Magdalene the voice I ached to hear as a child: not a sinner or a saint, but a revolutionary of the spirit, an apostle whose truth was deliberately suppressed but will never be silenced
