The Death of Bohemia—And the American Artist’s Complicity
If we let them erase us… If we let them scare us into silence… If we keep pretending that this isn’t happening… Then we will not be remembered as the generation that fought back. We will be remembered as the generation that sold out. And we will not deserve to be called artists at all.

The Death of Bohemia—And the American Artist’s Complicity
By Robert Jerome Pagan
History is not an endless loop, but it sure as hell echoes.
In 1939, when the Nazis seized Bohemia and Moravia, they didn’t just take land. They took culture. They took freedom. They took the voices that dared to challenge them.
Bohemia had been a haven for surrealists, poets, musicians, revolutionaries—anyone who dared to create outside the rigid mold of state-approved thought. But Hitler and his regime knew that art is dangerous. Art plants ideas in people's heads. Art stirs rebellion. And so, they erased it. They banned books. They criminalized expression. They exterminated the artists who wouldn’t fall in line.
Now, tell me—what the hell do you think is happening in America today?
Trump’s Cultural Coup—And the War on Free Expression
Donald Trump has made it clear: Art that doesn’t serve his agenda has no place in America. And in true authoritarian fashion, his movement is gutting every institution that allows for radical, challenging, or independent thought.
Here are the facts:
Trump has appointed himself Chairman of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, ousting board members like David M. Rubenstein and replacing them with political cronies. His goal? To erase “woke” art and silence LGBTQ+ and diverse voices. His first move? Defunding and banning drag performances, queer productions, and politically conscious work.
Trump’s Supreme Court picks empowered states to ban books at a record rate. Over 4,000 books—many written by LGBTQ+ authors, Black scholars, and political dissidents—were removed from schools in 2023 alone, according to PEN America.
The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) were gutted under Trump. While he claims to love “free speech,” he choked off funding for independent artists and tried to turn the arts into a tool for his own nationalist propaganda.
Trump and his allies have openly attacked public broadcasting. PBS and NPR—two of the last remaining platforms for non-corporate storytelling—have been defunded and smeared as “liberal bias” operations.
The rise of drag bans and anti-LGBTQ+ legislation has criminalized entire art forms. Tennessee was the first to make public drag performances illegal—a direct assault on queer artistry and expression.
This isn’t paranoia. This isn’t exaggeration.
This is happening now.
And the worst part? The artists—the ones who are supposed to fight back—are doing nothing.
American Artists Have Sold Out—And History Will Judge Them For It
There was a time when American artists led revolutions.
Bob Dylan and Joan Baez sang against the Vietnam War. Nina Simone used her music to fuel the Civil Rights Movement. Woody Guthrie’s guitar had a sticker on it that read: “THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS.”
Today?
American artists are too scared to take a stand.
Where are the protest songs? Where is the art that shakes the foundation of power? Where are the filmmakers willing to risk their careers to tell the truth?
Instead of fighting, artists have become cowards.
They chase brand deals instead of revolutions.
They beg corporations for permission to create instead of making their own platforms.
They let algorithms decide what’s safe to say instead of speaking freely.
They worry more about offending sponsors than offending fascists.
Let’s be brutally honest: The right is doing a better job funding its artists than the left.
Trump’s movement pours money into right-wing films, books, podcasts, and music, flooding the culture war with conservative propaganda. Meanwhile, progressive artists are sitting around hoping Hollywood and Spotify’s algorithms will somehow “save” them.
Hollywood, Spotify, Netflix—they are not your allies.
They don’t fund radical art. They fund whatever is safe, profitable, and marketable to as many people as possible. They don’t want revolution. They want compliance.
And guess what? Trump and his people know that. They don’t need to imprison artists when they can just make them afraid to speak out in the first place.
Bohemia is Burning—And Only Artists Can Save It
This is not the first time the world has seen a movement try to erase culture.
This is not the first time a government has tried to control what artists can say.
And in the past, when fascists tried to choke out free thought, artists fought back.
But what happens when artists stop fighting?
What happens when the people who are supposed to tell the truth censor themselves before the government even has to?
What happens when a generation of musicians, filmmakers, and writers decide that being liked, being safe, and making money is more important than making change?
I’ll tell you what happens.
Bohemia dies. The fire goes out. And in its place? Fascism.
If You Are an Artist, This is Your Call to Arms
I’m talking to every musician, filmmaker, actor, writer, director, and artist reading this right now. Where is your rage?
Where is the music, the movies, the books that refuse to bow to this machine?
Where is the art that makes people uncomfortable, that makes them think, that forces them to confront reality instead of escaping into corporate-sponsored mediocrity?
Because I promise you this:
If we let them erase us…
If we let them scare us into silence…
If we keep pretending that this isn’t happening…
Then we will not be remembered as the generation that fought back.
We will be remembered as the generation that sold out.
And we will not deserve to be called artists at all.
